Technical conversion of 2D assets for 360° Fulldome projection

The Immersive Dome

Transforming standard 3D environments and flat-authored content into immersive 360° spherical experiences for fulldome theatres. The work sits between VFX craft and exhibition engineering: geometry, resolution budgets, and the audience’s body in a room that has no “frame.”

From flat to spherical

A conventional render or edit only contains what sat in front of a virtual camera. Fulldome and headset delivery demand content that wraps the sphere. Forcing 2D into 360 without a conversion plan produces stretch, empty poles, or generative fill that fails when accuracy matters. Our workflow treated conversion as a designed stage: decide what remains authored, what is remapped, and what must be rebuilt for the dome’s sweet spot.

Technical sweet spot

Dome programmes are unforgiving about specs. Content typically lives in a 1:1 master with imagery constrained to a circular fulldome mask. Resolution climbs quickly — 4K may suffice for smaller VR, while 8K is often the practical sweet spot for theatres before file sizes become unmanageable. Pipelines pulled equirectangular masters into tools like After Effects with VR conversion utilities to produce the circular dome map, then validated on preview projectors before mastering.

Composition rules change when the audience can look up. Horizon placement, motion speed, and text size were redesigned for peripheral vision — what reads as elegant on a monitor can feel nauseating or illegible under a full hemisphere.

Flat authoring versus dome master

Reviews paired the original framed render with the converted dome still. That contrast made trade-offs visible: where we accepted letterboxing artefacts, where we rebuilt environment extensions, and where we slowed camera moves for comfort.

Spatial feel beyond pixels

Conversion is not only visual. Spatial audio for dome formats — object-based systems, ambisonics, or channel arrays — must track the image or the immersion collapses. Even when audio was owned by specialists, visual layout reserved “quiet zones” and motion paths that audio could lock to, so picture and sound shared one spatial story.

Outcome

A successful dome programme feels inevitable: audiences forget the conversion labour and simply inhabit the story. Behind that ease is a stack of geometric decisions, resolution discipline, and preview loops — the technical craft that turns a flat asset into a surround experience.
