2024Anatomical sculpting using Blender & Substance Painter
High-fidelity skeletal sculpting for bio-mechanical visualisation — not a stylised Halloween prop, but a study of structure, weight, and surface that could hold up in turnarounds, lighting tests, and educational close-ups. Built primarily in Blender, finished and textured in Substance Painter.
Why anatomy as a technical brief
Medical and educational visuals fail when topology lies. A femur that looks “cool” but cannot articulate cleanly in a turntable, or a skull whose landmarks drift under raking light, breaks trust. This project treated the skeleton as an engineering problem wrapped in craft: proportion locks, edge-flow that survives subdivision, and UV islands that Substance Painter can paint without fighting seams on critical ridges.
Blocking and sculpting in Blender
Work began with primary masses — pelvis, rib cage, skull vault — before chasing vertebrae detail. Multires sculpting handled organic undulation; retopo passes cleaned deformation-critical zones so the mesh remained usable beyond a single beauty still.
Reference was non-negotiable. Orthographic plates, museum photography, and measured proportions kept the sculpt honest when artistic instinct wanted to exaggerate. Where the brief allowed slight stylisation for readability on screen, it was applied after the underlying structure read correctly at a glance.
Wireframe versus material
A skeletal asset has two lives: the topological one (how it subdivides, how it UV’s) and the material one (how bone, porosity, and micro-wear catch light). Pairing a wireframe or clay viewport with a Substance-finished beauty pass made progress reviews concrete — clients see both readiness and intent.
Substance Painter: bone as a material system
Bone is not a flat beige. Smart materials provided a start; hand-painted cavities, suture lines, and abrasion told the story of age and use. Height and roughness maps did more storytelling than albedo alone — especially under the hard key lights typical of bio-mechanical presentation renders.
Turnarounds and delivery
Final delivery included clay and textured turnarounds, stills for documentation, and a topology sheet for any downstream rigging. The goal was an asset that reads as anatomy first and digital craft second — so that when you spin it, you believe the joints before you admire the shaders.
